Coal-Washing Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Project at Guangzhou Nansha Thermal Power Plant
Project Background
In the face of common industry challenges—high chemical consumption, frequent effluent quality fluctuations, and high maintenance costs associated with conventional coal slurry water treatment processes—the Nansha China Resources Thermal Power Plant has actively responded to the call for green and energy-efficient operations by pursuing technological upgrades. The project ultimately adopted an innovative “three-no direct filtration” system, designed to establish a more economical, stable, and environmentally friendly closed-loop system for coal slurry water reuse.
Solution
We have custom-designed an integrated direct-filtration solution with a core processing capacity of 20 tonnes per hour. This solution seamlessly integrates three groundbreaking concepts:
·Passive water production: The system fully leverages the potential energy difference in the process flow to achieve gravity-fed filtration of coal slurry, with virtually zero additional electricity consumption in the core water-production stage.
·No consumable replacement: Equipped with an ASSFBR direct filtration unit, intelligent closed-loop backwashing maintains consistent flux over the long term, completely eliminating the recurring costs and operational burdens associated with periodic replacement of filter cloths and filter cartridges.
·Non-discriminatory influent acceptance: With robust adaptability to water-quality fluctuations, this system eliminates the need for complex pretreatment and conditioning steps, enabling direct treatment of coal-slurry wastewater from various sources and at varying concentrations while ensuring continuous, stable operation.
Outstanding Results
Since its commissioning in September 2022, the system has consistently exceeded all performance targets, setting a benchmark for quality improvement and efficiency gains at the power plant:
·Exceptionally stable water quality: The treated recycled clear water consistently maintains suspended solids (SS) below 10 mg/L, resulting in crystal-clear water that fully meets—or even exceeds—internal standards for circulating cooling water and process water.
·Significant economic benefits: Compared with the conventional process, flocculant dosage is reduced by more than 50%, and the comprehensive energy consumption per unit of water treatment is reduced by over 60%.
·Intelligent operation management: Full-process automated control enables unattended, stable operation, significantly reducing the intensity of manual intervention and the complexity of system management.
Customer Value
The successful implementation of the Nansha China Resources Power project has validated the outstanding applicability of the “three-no direct filtration” technology under the complex operating conditions typical of large-scale thermal power enterprises. This technology not only delivers immediate cost reductions for customers but also ensures the smooth operation of the main production system through its exceptionally high operational reliability. Moreover, it achieves zero wastewater discharge and enables the resource recovery and reuse of effluent, thereby significantly enhancing the enterprise’s environmental image and social responsibility value. As such, it serves as a highly instructive benchmark for the upgrading and transformation of peer companies.
